Lesson Four: Relevant Goals

Welcome to lesson four! In this lesson, we'll take a close look at your goal and make sure that it is relevant to your overall mission. After all, there's no sense in pursuing goals that you have no desire to complete!

Don't make goals that don't align with your vision

Often, it is easy to make goals just for the sake of making goals. We can get swept up in the brilliance of other peoples' goals, that we think we need to accomplish the same things. This can lead to burnout, discouragement, and even resentment when those goals don't align with the things that we actually desire for our lives.

Just because a goal is worthy and looks great, doesn't mean you need to pursue it yourself. Saying that a goal doesn't fit your vision isn't saying that anyone who wants it is wrong; it's saying that it isn't for you and that you won't waste your time and energy pursuing things you're not called to.

Analyze your goals to ensure they fit the vision you have for your life

Before fully committing to a goal, take a moment (or several) to really look at it and make sure that it aligns with what you want out of life. Does it align with your values? Desires? Callings? If not, feel free to toss the goal out of the window.

Taking the time to look at how a goal aligns with our vision in life helps create an emotional connection with the goal itself. We're more likely to work towards and complete a goal if we feel like it matters to us.

This practice doesn't promise that we will always feel great about our goals as we pursue them. Often, there will be parts of the goal completion project where we might get discouraged, uncertain, or tired. Making sure our goals align with our values gives us the kick in the pants to press on through the challenges.

Your Turn!

On page four, write down a short paragraph about how your goals does or doesn't align with your goals. You can refer back to this paragraph any time you're struggling to complete your goal.

Now that we're confident that our goals are relevant to our vision, we're going to cover what our timeframe is going to be.
